LO2: Legal, Ethical and Moral
LEGAL
COPYRIGHT
As I am creating a promo for a documentary, the Copyright act is important as it is a legal means of protecting work. It is a type of intellectual property that provides exclusive distribution and usage rights for the work. This means whatever content the creator created cannot be used or distributed by anyone else without the consent of the creator. The length of copyright protection may vary from country to country, but it usually lasts for the life of the owner plus 50 to 100 years. This will ensure my promo is not copied, distributed or used without my permission.
It is illegal for anyone to publish the work of anyone and the result in breaking the copyright law will result in a fine put £50,000.
I will need to gain permission from potential musicians and people who may feature on my promo.
DATA PROTECTION
Data protection act will allow the data my production team holds to be safe and secure , while allowing our actors and production team to feel comfortable when giving us their personal details such as name, age, email, number etc. This will make sure the staff working on our product data is used lawfully and fairly. Everyone who hold data is responsible for following the rules of 'data protection'.
e.g. The data of homeless people, researchers, homeless specialist etc, will be kept safe and not shared with anyone without their permission
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHT
Intellectual property rights are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creation for a certain period of time.
Without protection of ideas and businesses individuals would not fully benefits from their inventions/ ideas. Copy right and trademarks fit into the intellectual property right. The intellectual property right act benefits my promo as it will be protected from anyone to use/ distribute without our permission.
PRS
PRS (Performing Right Society) will allow me to use music on our promo. PRS will allow me to use music in my promo without breaking the copy right acts.
The PRS website says
'We pay royalties to our members when their work is performed, broadcast, streamed, downloaded, reproduced, played in public or used in film and TV.'
PRS will be useful to me as any potential music/ sound will be available to feature as part of my product, while I am following the copy right act/ intellectual property right act.
It is illegal to use any music/sound that does not belong to you without any permission it will be brought down and you may be fined as well.
Slander
Our promo must ensure it doesn't feature any spoken statement which may harm someone's reputation. We must avoid slander in our promo as our features such as the homeless people featuring may potentially slander a person if this does occur we will be sure to remove this and not add it into our promo.
The consequences for slandering someone are results such as being fines, product being taken down, court etc.
Libel
Similar to Libel our documentary must ensure it doesn't feature any written statement which may harm someone's reputation.
We must avoid false written statement on someone in our promo as it features newspaper articles. To avoid this we should chose newspapers that do not harm anyone's reputation.
The consequences for being Libel towards someone are results such as being fines, product being taken down, court etc.
ETHICAL
Making a documentary we will have to look out for negatively representing any homeless person in order to not offend or misrepresent. This will be achieved through not presenting them as not useless and potentially fit for work. This is also challenging stereotypes as they are mostly presented as uneducated and useless.
We would have to seek copyright permission for the use of music in our documentary. Any brands that will be featured as using their work/ name could break the intellectual property right act.
The artist/musicians music used in the documentary will be entitled to royalties due to our documentary featuring their music. Also, any brands appearing in the documentary will need for us to gain their permission to be featured in our film.
The aim of this documentary is not just to make more people aware and educated on the issue but to also present ways people can help preventing the growing issue.
Using real homeless people in our documentary will appeal to our audience. This is because most people have never had a conversation with an actual rough sleeper and heard their different stories .
In our documentary I will also present statistics and facts to inform and educate how important this subject is and why.
To also inform and educate we will be including professional advice from shelter/charity workers. This will give the audience a professional view on the issue. This will then achieve our purpose on informing and educating the audience as well as showing them a way they can participate through helping.

BBFC
As our documentary features and presents drugs, it immediately makes our documentary not suitable for people under the age of 15.
Looking at the BBFC website it clearly states;
'Compliance Officers look at issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, language, imitable behaviour, nudity, sex, sexual violence, theme and violence when making decisions. They also consider context, the tone and impact of a work'.

Sheffield City Of Shelter
We will be creating a 1-2 minute promo for our documentary on the struggles homeless people face everyday and the cause of the growing issue in Sheffield. The'Sheffield City Of Shelter' promo will feature glimpses of real homeless people and real struggle. I intend for the documentary promo to give the audience a clear idea on what the documentary is really going to be about.
My overall aim/ purpose of this promo
is to encourage people to want to watch the full documentary after what was portrayed in the promo for people to be aware and pay more attention on this issue. The people I would like to feature in this promo documentary are real life rough sleepers. Also,I would like to show that we are getting professional views through featuring people who work in shelters and specialise in helping the homeless. This will also show the audience what the documentary will be about and shape them an idea.
Potential Content
Snippets Interviews with homeless people- This will be a presentation of their live such as how they got here and their story. This will feature to ensure our audience have an understanding on what is the lives of homeless people. Specifically for the promo we will include a short part of this.
Presentation of Sheffield. This is to set the location and to present where the documentary will be featured/ based on. Presentation on features such as the City Centre, Moor , Train Station etc. Areas which are clear that it is set/ based in Sheffield.
Portrayal of rough/homeless areas- This will allow our audience to experience the roughness and clear/ explicit lives homeless people live. This is best suited to our target audience as a real presentation of homelessness is not experienced or seen by our target audience.
Teacher to Pupil mode of address- As our audience is part of the ABC1, the most suitable way to address this audience will be a much more formal way as this is how they are most likely to communicate like in their day to day lives. Also, the purpose of our promo is to inform and educate so a teacher to pupil mode of address is most suited for the promo/ documentary.
The promo will give the audience an understanding of what it is the documentary is about/based on and not what occurs in the documentary in order to not give too much away .

We would like the Promo to be clear in the fact that it is Sheffield based, about the homeless issue and the causes/solutions of this growing dilemma.
The intended location will be all over Sheffield due to the documentary being based on homelessness in Sheffield. The types of location will mostly be the centre of Sheffield such as Train station area, The Moor, etc. This is due to there being many homeless people around these areas. The areas will be public areas and will not need permission to film. The promo will make it clear that this is a Sheffield based documentary.

Film Trailer 1
Name : Lion
Production Company: The Weinstein Company and Sunstar Enterrtainment
Purpose: Educate the audience on real life issues and inform them on a real life story. Although the movie is also intended to entertain the audience through a real life adventure. The trailer presents a short snippet of this and is intended to lead the audience or make them want to watch the entire film.
Audience: The audience for this film are an older audience such as people ages 25 to 40 year olds and people from an ABC1 male and female category. The film/trailer is targeted at this specific audience as the film is based on a true story which an older audience find much more interesting then a 100% fictional. I feel like this is an appropriate age range as the age group is much more understanding and the film draws more towards them. Also, the characters in the film contrast from the feature of poor people and areas , while there are also ABC1 groups presented which may make it relatable towards the target audience. Also, the reason‘Lion’ is aimed at an audience from ages 25-40
and a female gender. This being an emotional drama based on a true story is
what the target audience tends to like to see and experience. The music used in
this trailer is sad and slow tempo. This trailer suits
its female ABC1 audience through it being an intense drama being built on the
audiences heightened emotions throughout the film.
Title and Graphics
'Based on a true story'
Making this clear to the audience that this film
is based on a true story it allows the audience
to not only become more
interested. It makes the film more powerful this is due to the audience
watching this while having the knowledge that this had really occurred. Making
'based on a true story clear is importance to allow the audience to carry this
information through out the film and after.
'LION'
This is portrayed at the end of the film to
connote the representation of a Lion to the brother fighting to find his
brother sharing the positive similarities with Lions e.g Strong, Brave etc.
Use Of Transitions
Fades are used through out this trailer
transition to different scenes. This portrays the drama and how upsetting the
situation is. Also, this could be to allow the audience to process what is
occurring film. Dramas trailers are much less exciting and lively as an action
adventure and are much more dramatic.
Ed2iting Techniques
Editing used in this trailer:
Cross Cutting -Through out trailer
This is due to this being a trailer not a film.
The trailer is attended for the audience to only see short clips from the
film.
Jump Cut
Shot reverse Shot
Performance
The main character (Dev Patel)-
Background
Watching this trailer I have discovered
that the character played by Dev Patel is adopted to caring parents.
He came from a poor, rough and tough background in India. His life in
India seems to 'haunt' him due to his little brother and him
being separated. He can't tolerate his brother looking for him.
The character seems very caring and a
sincere person which is portrayed when he stops his life to find his
brother in the country home to 1.3 billion people.
Film Trailer 2:
Name: Now You See Me 2
Production Company
K/O Paper Production and TIK Films.
K/O Paper Production and TIK Films.
Purpose
The purpose of the trailer is to entertain its audience enough to want to go and see this film.
Target Audience
This film is targeted more towards a male audience in a C2DE category and towards the age range of 15-25. Watching this trailer clearly presents how it is targeted and appealing towards this target audience as this age group tend to enjoy excitement which is clear and strongly present in the trailer making the purpose of the trailer successful as the target audience are interested enough to go and watch the actual and full film. Like 'Lion', the trailer uses its target audiences emotion/mood to want to continue watching the full film. In 'Now You See Me', this is done through a lot going on in the trailer such as music, sound effect, bright light etc. which have all contributed in giving the audience a sense of thrill.
Titles and Graphics
'This Summer'
To allow the audience to know when the
release date of the film is.
'You haven't seen'... 'Anything yet'
'Now you see me'... '2'
Cast names
Credits
'July 4'
Facebook and Twitter page- This is used as the target audience are digital natives and majority of them being active on social media platforms such as this.
The Group of Magicians/ 4 Horsemen
The group of magicians in this trailer seem/
look like the average casual people. Although they are talented in magic they
seem like any other person. The group seem to have a close friendship and work
well together. They all wear dark clothing e.g. suit, dress, and leather
jacket. This creates sort of a mysterious feel what magicians should come
across as. The members have funny, quirky, joyful etc. Personalities.
Enemies
The trailer presents a
dilemma to do with a different group of people. Their performance seems to be
completely opposite through not being so close, friendly, serious etc. The
clearly trailer presents a popular actor (Daniel Radcliffe) due to his popularity
and for more people t be interested in his sinister presence in the movie.
These characters are presented quite rich such as suits and private jets. This
is a sort of stereo-type of rich white men. These 'enemies' are not portrayed
in this trailer as much in order to not give anything away however allow the
audience to be familiar.
Overall, this is a trailer of the presentation
of good vs. evil. Thee music used in ‘Now you see me’
is fast, up tempo and exciting. This is similar to what the target audience
would listen to and is well suited for them, This is through ‘Now You See
Me 2’ being fun while also giving a sort of electrifying. The camera work is also much
more faster and quicker than ‘Lion’ to gain excitement from the audience.
Name : Wild Thoughts By: Dj Khaled ft Rihanna +
Bryson Tiller.
Production Company/ Director: Colin Tilley
Production Company/ Director: Colin Tilley
></div>
"Wild Thoughts “is a song produced by American Dj, Dj Khaled, which
was taken from his Grateful album. The song features artist such as Rihanna and
Bryson Tiller. Colin Tilley directed the Music Video.
AUDIENCE
Male and Female 18-35 the reason for this is due to
the song being a remake of a previous song. This means that the target audience
is two different generations. Hip-Hop is a genre for both male and females. In
this specific song the artist are both female and male sort of talking to or
about each other which is another reason for why its targeted at both male and
female.
MES
The costumes worn through out are very Latino styles
due to the instrumentals of the music and setting being set in a Latino environment.
The holiday nightlife setting of the music video is a very holiday nightlife
care free environment. The party looks as if it would be attended by a c2de
category. Rihanna is presented in pink off shoulder top, green floral pants,
bandana and hoop earrings. Also, her makeup was very bold.
This look instantly connects with a Hispanic feel
clearly suiting the environment.
The song is very upbeat and exciting. Including both
male and female artist.
GENRE
Hip-hop
NARRATIVE
The music video is about everybody having a good time
with a crowd of people.
Lighting
Low-Key lighting is used in this music video for a
romantic feel, which is the reason for the music video to be set at night. This
also allows the audience to become excited through the dark night with people
in bright costumes.
Music Video 2
Name : Hand To Myself by Selena Gomez
Production Company/ Director: Alex Keshishian
AUDIENCE
Female ages 15-25 this is due to Selena Gomez having a
young target audience overall. However, the music video is quite sexual too.
The target audience will be a C2DE group earning a low income to due to their
young age.
MES
Selena Gomez is wearing a very long black wig with
bangs kind of portraying her in a mysterious vibe. Her makeup is very subtle.
The setting is in an expensive house owned by an abc2 owner. Selena wears black
underwear through out the house presenting this 'psycho' image.
NARRATIVE
The music video is based on
the character (Selena Gomez) not being able to literally keep her hand to
herself. The video starts off with the singer handcuffed on a bed presenting
how she can’t keep her hands to herself. TH camera present many images and
related belonging of a blonde attractive male whom she is obsessed with. The
video is based on her Add to dictionary with the man being so bad she breaks in
to his expensive house half naked until police arrive to collect the intruder.
The lyrics "can’t keep my hands to myself" are repeated throughout
the video. The video turns out to have a twist with Selena and the Blonde male
watching what was all along a music video featuring what looked like to be
couple.
However, she does have Smokey bold eyes his clearly present The setting is in
an expensive house owned by an abc2 owner. Selena wears black underwear through
out the house presenting this 'psycho' image.
This video suits
the female male C2DE category due to this being sort of their lifestyle. The
artist featured in this music video is the audience’s ideal self and partner,
which is another reason the video suits them. Similar to Wild Thoughts however,
the audience is a little bit more niche through a
young female
audience in a C2DE from ages 15-25 category are interested and adore 'love'
which is clearly presented in the film. The artists are all the audiences’ ideal
self and partner where the audience want to look and act like them. Through
Bryson Tiller, Selena Gomez and Rihanna they all have a pop star persona. However,
the narrative of the music videos a far different through Wild Thoughts being a
positive party set which ‘Hands To Myself’ being sexy and based on one
person/artist. Overall, the mood is quite similar giving off an exciting and
positive mood.
Promo- Birmingham Vote
Name: How to vote in the UK- Birmingham
Purpose:
The purpose of this promo is to make it easier, educate and inform the people of Birmingham who do not know how to vote to vote.
Who do you think are the target audience?
The target audience for this is ABC2-C1DE category from the ages 18+. This is due to this being something everyone can do and should do. This is also aimed at new voters in Birmingham giving a guide on how to vote, when and where.
The accent being local is also very welcoming rather then having a robotic voice speak the local accent clearly presents she is ‘talking to you’ (people from Birmingham).
How are the audience addressed?
They are addressed quite clearly in order for no mistakes to be made. They are also addressed formally and teacher to pupil. This is because they are informing and teaching us on how to do something
The audience are clearly and formally addressed.
What editing techniques are used?
Simple
Shot reverse shot is used to go into detailed and explain on how the process works
What defines this as an informative piece?
Many information and contact details are given in this to show people how to do it. It is very detailed through a 5+min advertisement Facts are used through out the video. No emotions are presented in this video. However, the women seems friendly and welcoming, which is in order for the audience to want to listen.
Name: Rolls Royce- How Engines Work
Purpose:
The purpose of this promo is t present the quality of the Rolls Royce product towards its ABC1 target audience and potential buyers. By presenting this promo it may gain more people interested in this product. It is also purposed to educate the audience.
1. How does the Rolls video differ from Birmingham council in terms of addressing its audience?
This is targeted at an ABC1 audience with a high disposable income having the ability to afford this expensive brand. Also, a male with a ‘posh’ accent addresses the audience. Unlike the Birmingham promo, which is more local and spoken in a Birmingham accent. However, the formality and teacher to pupil conversation is similar although Royce Royce uses a much higher vocabulary to communicate to the ABC1 group. This advertisement is also targeted at males this is noticeable through the video being filled with males and spoken to by a male. This is due to the target audience and buyers being male. Birmingham City council Promo is for both genders and anyone who is eligible to vote in Birmingham. This makes the Royce Royce’s audience being a niche audience.
The video uses animation through out in order to go into detail and teach the audience on the making and equipment of the cars. This is also informative through allowing people to see how it is made. The company had done this to
Both share a similar purpose.
Different accents used in the videos in order to reach target audience. Accent used in these promos are accents the audience will most likely have/ similar.
Documentary Trailer
Name: Planet Earth II
Production Company: BBC
Purpose: The purpose of this documentary promo is to want people to watch the full documentary and become informed and educate people on animals/nature.
Audience:
For this documentary the target audience is intended for people aged 35-50. This is dude to the content being quite mature and best suited for this age group. The documentary is also targeted at people from the ABC1 category. This is quite clear as the music being quite dramatic, strong and mature, music which will appeal towards age group and also entertain. The documentary is also targeted at people who enjoy animals, wildlife, nature etc and find it interesting/ entertaining as well as informative/ educational. Also, the intended target audience is also someone who enjoys learning and being taught new things. The promo looks adventures and exciting so a specific gender is not being targeted although a specific personality is.
Title Graphics
Due to the Planet Earth series being well known as the most popular wildlife show, many descriptive title graphics or even narration was not needed as much as it is already quite popular. However title graphics that did feature In the promo was the name of the documentary Planet Earth II' this was presented at the very end of the promo to ensure the audience know what the product is it also featured the production teams logo 'BBC Earth' at the end graphics. This was all featured at the very end with the popular Planet Earth logo along with the feature of a globe. The feature of the globe is at the end after the audience are presented with the wildlife and nature showing that all what the 'planet' consists of.
I have also noticed the use of roman numerals 'II' in the title of Planet Earth rather than the more common se if 2. Again, this is due tot it being targeted at an older ABC1 audience and roman numeral being more classy.
The promo for the documentary is quite different from the trailer 'Now you see me 2' this is clearly due to the genre and target audience being very different as Planet Earth is targeted at a much more mature/ older audience and an ABC1 audience.'Now you see me 2' is targeted at a much younger audience from the C2DE category, which includes loud and exciting music choice, young cast and also many fast and thrilling title graphics, while planet earth only feature on title graphic which is very slow and appropriate for its audience. Although, this promo differes from 'Now You See Me 2' It is more similar to the trailer for the movie 'LION' as they share the same ABC1 category target audience. Similarities such as sharing the same pase of title graphics and music being dramatic and suited for an older audience,
